New AHCA Study Underscores Need to Stabilize, Bolster U.S. Nursing Homes' Direct Care Workforce

The American Health Care Association (AHCA), which released an extensive new analysis of America's nursing home workforce, said that a significant national effort must be mounted to strengthen and stabilize a direct care workforce already battered by chronic Medicaid underfunding, and further threatened by state budget cuts due to the current economic downturn.

One month after receiving a temporary reprieve, employees at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston learned Wednesday that 3,800 people there will lose their jobs.

Oklahoma is Facing a Shortage of Medical Staff

By 2012, Oklahoma will face a shortage of 3,000 nurses, or about 12 percent of the current work force, along with hundreds of lab technicians, physical therapists and other medical professionals, according to Oklahoma Healthcare Workforce Center.
