Setting S.M.A.R.T. Goals in 2009

Posted by Laura McPeck, Director, Business Development

Wikipedia defines goals as “A goal or objective consists of a projected state of affairs which a person or a system plans or intends to achieve or bring about — a personal or organizational desired end-point in some sort of assumed development.”

I received a communication from, Healthworks Fitness - Back Bay on setting S.M.A.R.T. goals which offers guidance on setting intelligent goals to achieve your desired outcome. As we forge ahead into a New Year, it’s important to set S.M.A.R.T. goals in order to achieve a positive end result and attain your objectives set forth. Thought I would share:

Specific: A specific goal has a much greater chance of being accomplished than a general goal. To set a specific goal, answer the five "W" questions:
Who: Who is involved?
What: What do I want to accomplish?
Where: Where will I accomplish the goal?
When: When will I work on my goal and what is a realistic time frame for reaching my goal?
Why: What are the reasons, purpose or benefits of accomplishing the goal?

Measurable: Choose goals that have results you can measure. When you measure your progress, you stay on track, reach your target dates and experience the exhilaration of achievement.

Achievable: Think about what you can honestly achieve. Goal setting is a good way to push yourself beyond your current limits. So pick a goal that requires some effort, but choose a goal that is within reach.

Rewarding: It feels great to reach a goal, but find extra ways to reward yourself along the way. Plan rewards ahead of time so you have something to look forward to.

Timely/Trackable/Tangible: A goal should be grounded within a time frame. With no time frame tied to it there's no sense of urgency. Keeping track of your progress will help you stay motivated. A goal is tangible when you can experience it with one of your senses; taste, touch, smell, sight or hearing.

Text messaging…its smart recruitment advertising!

Posted by Laura McPeck, Director, Business Development

With the growing use of text messaging as a form of daily communications, it is a strategic move to incorporate a text messaging feature into your recruitment advertising efforts.

• Use Qtags Service, a text-based connection program that allows advertisers to interact with and connect/direct customers to specific offline and online information.
• It can be used with any advertising campaign (radio, print, tv & online) so that viewers or listeners can use a wireless phone to get additional information regarding job opportunities or an
open house by texting a specific word to QTAGS.
• When you send the text message to Qtags, you get a text reply that will include important information about the advertisement.

Qtags makes advertising messages unforgettable and long lasting. Learn more by visiting www.qtags.com and contact your account manager to learn how to include Qtags in your recruitment campaigns.

Elements of Effective Recruitment Ads

There are numerous details to consider when evaluating the effectiveness of a recruitment ad message. Ad size, color, amount of illustrations, and other factors all work together to create the impression an ad makes on the reader. What makes readers take notice of an ad? Do position, color and size of an ad make a difference and affect print ad success? Answers to these questions, and many others, are important for creating effective recruitment advertising. Unique advertising opportunity with taxi cabs

According to Vasquez “What makes taxis attractive to advertisers is their ability to circulate ad messages on a near-constant basis on city streets that during the day reach both shoppers already in a mood to spend and typically hard-to-reach office workers out for lunch or on their way to business appointments. And at night they reach folks out on the town.”

Campus newspapers continue to reach the youth market!

Posted by Laura McPeck, Director, Business Development

With campus recruiting season in full swing, there are so many ways to reach students. Through word of mouth, campus events, posters, flyers and also through….campus newspapers. According to the leading youth marketing company, Alloy Media + Marketing’s 2008 College Explorer Study, “92 % of college students with a daily newspaper have read it in the past 30 days”. These are extremely strong numbers.

According to a recent article by Tim Johnson, from the Burlington Free Press, “Declining readership of newsprint editions, which afflicts metro dailies around the country, does not seem to be a problem at local campuses. College students — the heart of the young demographic that regular newspapers worry about losing — seem to be avid readers of their campus papers. Never mind online editions, which are popular among parents and alumni. The students themselves are still reading the good old hard copies.”

Advertising ... high in the sky!

Posted by Tara Repucci, VP Northeastern Region

Okay, next time you fly, check out the ads ... on seat trays, air sickness bags, beverage cups and carts, napkins, seatback inserts and video screens.

According to a study released last month, the medium is quite effective. In fact, approximately 79 percent of consumers recalled tray table ads on an unaided basis. Just wait. In the near future, you'll be able to target airline passengers with your employment offer via WiFi online ads.

The challenge, of course, is fitting your unique message with the right venue and the right airline and the right passengers; but that's where NAS comes in.

Learn to be the Ultimate GenY Employer-of-choice

For some great tips on how to hold a campus information session worth attending, check out this AdAge article: http://adage.com/gennext/post?article_id=131397.

Granted it's geared toward companies recruiting for advertising agencies, but the ideas are universal.

Just want the highlights? Here you go:

  1. Customize your Employment Value Proposition pitch to the specific school and/or program.
  2. Give your audience some credit. Sell career development, not parties and perks.
  3. Show real-life case studies that highlight your competitive differentiators.
  4. Be specific about your ideal candidate. Don't waste your time ... or theirs.
  5. Leave something behind. At the very least, provide a one-sheet with available job openings, deadlines, contact information, etc. Even better, distribute your case studies.

Coke Still No. 1 in Brand Value

By Jean Halliday
Published: September 18, 2008
DETROIT (AdAge.com)

Coca-Cola is again the world's most valuable brand, according to Interbrand's just-released annual list of the Best 100 Global Brands. While Coke held onto its top slot from last year, IBM, by expanding its services and transitioning out of production, moved up to No. 2, knocking Vista-burdened Microsoft to third, said Andy Bateman, CEO of Interbrand New York. GE was fourth, boosted by its "Ecomagination" communications program, and Nokia fifth. The brands with the biggest growth in the past 12 months were: Google, up 43%; Apple, up 24%; Amazon, up 19%; retailer Zara, up 15%; and Nintendo, up 13%. Only one brand in the top 20, Citi, saw its brand value fall.

NAS Insights is pleased to present the following breaking news of interest to those professionals engaged in the field of health care recruitment:

What Nurses Want; Recruitment Plans Focus on Working Conditions Over Financial Rewards

Going Green

Environmentally-conscious individuals have been doing their part to protect the environment for years, whether by recycling or by conserving water or, more recently, by driving hybrid cars. And finally, advertisers are starting to catch on.

This year, ad agency Mullen created the first carbon-neutral media plan to market Timberland’s new Earthkeepers boot made from recycled materials. Not only is the product itself green, but Timberland also wanted the marketing strategy to be green.

Recognized as a MediaWeek Media Plan of the Year in 2008, Timberland’s strategy included the use of soy-based inks for the print portion of the campaign, not to mention recycling all printed materials at the end of the campaign (for example, turning billboards into waterproof totes). The out-of-home strategy included subway ads running on the green line in Boston to promote the use of public transportation, and – for ambient media – large glass cubes filled with plastic bottles and other post-consumer waste used in the creation of the Earthkeepers. The end result? Mother Nature was as happy with the eco-friendly campaign as Timberland was with the overwhelming consumer response and spike in sales.

Personally inspired by Timberland’s efforts, I started thinking about what we can do in the recruitment marketing world. Let’s face it – Timberland’s $10 million campaign may not be realistic for most HR marketing budgets, but my research did uncover some more cost-effective ways to make a big difference.

Rather than printing thousands of flyers for your next recruitment event, consider branding environmentally-friendly giveaways such as organic apparel, recycled tote bags, or flash drives made out of 100% recycled plastic. At NAS, we work with giveaway partner CSE to provide our clients with green options.

And don’t forget about virtual career fairs. NAS client Metavante hosted a virtual event to cater to the busy schedules of their prospective candidates and – as an added benefit – Metavante helped reduce carbon emissions by eliminating the need for hundreds of candidates to travel to the event via car. In addition to virtual job fairs, many employers are using sites such as www.futureresume.com and www.greenjobinterview.com to conduct virtual interviews.

Just some food for thought – and I would love to hear additional ideas!
